Carbon Repairs

Found on VeloNews.com

VeloNews.com published an excellent article about companies that repair carbon fiber frames.

They asked the five companies listed below what it would cost to repair the busted seat tube you see in the picture on the left. Prices range from $140 to $500.

Head on over to VeloNews to read their article, then bookmark the links below. Since most of the team rides on carbon frames it’s just a matter of time before those links come in handy.

Single-legged rigid fork adjusts for 26″ or 29er

Found on BikeRumor.com

Called F69, it’s a steel, single-legged fork with an internal carbon fiber reinforcement tube. That’s just the beginning. The carbon tube has an alloy sleeve mounted to the bottom that the brake posts bolt to, and the whole thing slides between two keyed slots to adjust the axle and brake mounts for either 26″ or 29er wheels. SRAM 10-Speed Grip Shift gets official

Found on BikeRumor.com

SRAM’s Grip Shift 10 speed is now officially official. They sent out a little press release this AM, and we’ve got some hands on with Jaroslav Kulhavy’s world cup winning bike’s pair.

SRAM 10-Speed Grip Shifter

Compared to the old Grip Shift, the barrel end is a little bulkier, but it’s alloy rather than the composites of past. Click feel is solid enough that it should prevent mis-shifts in most cases (OS downhill drops might be another story), but it still feels easy to dump gears when you want.

The rubber is really grippy, but feels like it’s sitting on a large enough bezel that they can keep it relatively thin. In other words, you shouldn’t be slipping when you try to shift, but it’s not mushy either.

Basically, fans of Grip Shift should be happy when it finally does get into production. While weight isn’t specified (nor is pricing or availability), SRAM is saying they’re answering the call from weight weenie racers.

Kulhavy’s bike had an interesting set up. The saddle was pushed all the way back and the stem was super long and flipped low.

More interesting from a spec standpoint was the Red front road derailleur he was running on it. Like all their 1:1 road and mountain stuff, looks like the Grip Shift twisters will be equally compatible across the board.

Schwalbe updates Racing Ralph, adds budget Rapid Rob

Schwalbe’s Racing Ralph gets a new tread pattern, shown at right. On the left is the new Rapid Rob, which gets the old Racing Ralph tread pattern but a cheaper casing to come in at just $30.
Updated Schwalbe Racing Ralph

The Racing Ralph’s tread blocks are now cut on a triangle with a horizontal relief. It also has a new GateStar compound for 4X racing that has a super soft side knob compound with a firm center section. Weights are 425g for 26×2.25 and 535g for 29×2.25.

They have some puncture protection under the tread that runs about halfway thru the outer knobs. All are tubeless ready. Prices are about $90.

The Rocket Ron, center, stays the same. The Hans Dampf and Ice Spiker Pro now come in a 29er and the Nobby Nic is also available with the GateStar compound.

SRAM 10-Speed Twist Shifters

We thought we’d never see the day. SRAM has (un)officially brought back the twist shifters, and man, they couldn’t have picked a better platform to do it on.

Jaroslav Kulhavy’s World Cup winning Specialized Epic 29er was not only the first full suspension 29er to win a WC XC race, it brings back GripShift in a big way. Details are scant -nonexistent, really- but the pictures say enough.
SRAM has invited us over to France for a little point-to-point riding in October with the teaser that we’ll be riding something totally new. Guesses are, this is at least part of it. The pics are a bit too small to see if anything else is new, but, you know, XX has been unchanged since its launch…
Weight weenies have been spotted using these third party twisters, and we’ve got a set of them in on testing, but it looks like you’ll soon be able to get the real deal.
